MANAGING YOUR DIABETES
When you have diabetes, don’t wait for things to happen to you. Be proactive – check you blood glucose levels, look after your feet and eyes, eat well… and if you notice any problems at all, see your doctor straight away. The best thing you can do to stay healthy is to take control.
Blood glucose monitoring
Blood glucose testing puts you in control of your condition and allows you to make adjustments to your diet or insulin dosage. The most useful times to test are:
< 4 mmol/l - Risk of hypoglycaemia
4 – 7 mmol/l – Target range
7.1 – 10 mmol/l – Result slightly raised
> 10.1 mmol/l – Risk of hyperglycaemia
Often you need to test
If you have Type 1 diabetes, you’ll probably need to test once or twice a day. If you have Type 2 diabetes, once you’ve achieved good control you’ll only need to test once or twice a week. For patients on insulin therapy, you may need more testing if your dose of insulin changes frequently.
It’s also a good idea to test more often:
Testing strips and monitors
As well as monitoring your blood glucose levels, it’s also a good idea to check your blood pressure regularly if you have diabetes. Test strips and monitoring devices are available at our pharmacies.
